GLAD Answers Helps Married Couple With Passport Name Change

GLAD Answers recently received an email from a same-sex couple newly married in the Netherlands. Both men are U.S. citizens, and so they sent proof of their Dutch marriage to the U.S. Consulate in Amsterdam in order to change the last names on their passports. The Consulate initially said that - although they would process a name change request from a different-sex married couple with a Dutch marriage certificate - for same-sex couples they could only process a name change if the marriage took place in one of the places in the United States where same-sex couples can legally marry.

Kosilek v. Spencer: Questions and Answers

The First Circuit Court of Appeals ruled January 17 that the Commonwealth cannot deny Michelle Kosilek, an incarcerated transgender woman, gender reassignment surgery to treat her severe gender identity disorder.
